Background of the study
Digital note-taking has become a popular method for students to capture and organize information in the digital age. With the increasing availability of smartphones, tablets, and computers, students in secondary schools now have access to various digital tools designed to enhance learning. However, despite the potential benefits of digital note-taking, there are numerous challenges faced by students, particularly in regions like Lafia, Nasarawa State, where access to technology can be inconsistent.

Digital note-taking offers several advantages, including the ability to easily edit and organize notes, integrate multimedia elements, and store notes in digital formats for later access. Yet, students in Lafia encounter several obstacles, such as inadequate access to digital devices, lack of technical skills, and distractions from social media or other applications on mobile devices. Additionally, students often struggle with managing the organization and retrieval of digital notes, leading to inefficient use of digital tools. Research indicates that while digital note-taking has the potential to improve learning outcomes, the challenges students face in adopting these tools can hinder their effectiveness (Okunoye, 2023; Abdulwahab & Ighodalo, 2024).

The increasing reliance on digital devices for education calls for a deeper understanding of the difficulties students experience with digital note-taking, especially in areas like Lafia, where educational infrastructure is still developing. This study will investigate these challenges, focusing on the specific barriers that limit students' ability to effectively utilize digital note-taking tools.

Statement of the problem
The adoption of digital note-taking in secondary schools in Lafia Local Government Area has been slow, primarily due to various challenges faced by students. These challenges range from inadequate access to devices and technical skills to poor management of digital notes. The introduction of digital note-taking has not been accompanied by sufficient guidance on best practices, leading to a lack of efficiency in the way students use digital tools for note-taking. As a result, students may not be maximizing the potential benefits of digital note-taking, which could negatively impact their academic performance. This research aims to identify and analyze the key challenges faced by students in Lafia, providing insights into how these challenges can be addressed to improve the effectiveness of digital note-taking.

Objectives of the study

  1. To investigate the challenges secondary school students in Lafia Local Government Area face in adopting digital note-taking tools.
  2. To examine the level of technical skills among secondary school students in Lafia in relation to digital note-taking.
  3. To assess the effectiveness of existing digital note-taking tools used by students in Lafia.

Research questions

  1. What are the primary challenges secondary school students in Lafia face when adopting digital note-taking tools?
  2. How proficient are secondary school students in Lafia with using digital note-taking tools?
  3. How effective are the digital note-taking tools currently used by students in Lafia in supporting their learning?

Significance of the study
This study will offer significant insights into the challenges faced by secondary school students in Lafia in adopting digital note-taking tools. The findings will inform educators, policymakers, and developers of digital tools about the specific needs of students, enabling them to develop tailored interventions to improve the adoption and use of digital note-taking in the region.

Scope and limitations of the study
This study focuses on secondary school students in Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, and investigates the challenges they face in adopting digital note-taking. The research is limited to secondary schools within Lafia and does not explore the wider region of Nasarawa State or the primary education sector.
